Any sort of container can serve the utilitarian function of holding the stones, but well-chosen bowls harmonize with the wood of your board. The color and grain patterns of the bowls combine with the color and pattern of the wood to enhance the aesthetic experience.
The finest quality bowls are cut with masame grain so the lines are straight and parallel. Because they are made from natural materials, no two sets are exactly alike. Each has a unique beauty.
While these pictures show a very good example of each type of bowl, grain patterns differ from set to set. Both bowls will complement each other, and often all of the pieces are cut from the same piece of wood, so you may see the same characteristics in each bowl. The bottom of all the bowls are also carved, as shown in the picture below (of quince bowls).
The sides of the bowls are thick, usually a half inch or more, for holding heavy go stones. And we find it’s a good idea to put a piece of cloth inside before putting stones in. This helps keeps the inside finish from getting scratched up and will keep them in the best possible condition, as these bowls will last a lifetime of play.
